Twelve-Year-Old Philanthropist Walks Across the Country to Benefit Homeless Kids

11yearoldfinisheswalkdcraiseawarenessbflwfw47dtrl
Zach Bonner is not your average twelve-year-old boy. In fact, he is a rather unique child. As part of a journey to help millions of homeless kids in the country, he began a 2,500-mile "March Across America" in March. The mission will end in September. Marching five hours per day for 178 days, his journey from Tampa to Los Angeles is truly inspiring.

"'March Across America,' I hope, will give voice to the millions of kids that do not have one. If it only helps one child, it will be completely worth it." Philanthropy became the primary focus of his life when he was six-years-old. After a hurricane hit his hometown of Tampa, he felt compelled to deliver water and supplies to his neighbors in a little red wagon. In 2005, he founded the nonprofit Little Red Wagon Foundation to help underprivileged children and to build awareness among neighborhoods.

Cancer-Killing Machine?

Invent_kanz_main

The world is waiting for the day that a cure for cancer will be invented; however, with the help of John Kanzius, that day may be right around the corner.

John Kanzius was diagnosed with leukemia in the spring of 2002, which helped motivate him to invent this machine. He was searching for a solution to killing off cancer cells without going through the pain of chemotherapy. Therefore, he invented a machine that generates an intense electromagnetic field and kills cancer by heating nanoparticles attached to the tumors (from the inside, out).

In 2004, he filed for a patent and introduced the idea to close friends and doctors. Many renowned scientists were attracted to the device, including David Geller, the co-director of the Liver Cancer Center at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Steven Curley, a professor of surgical oncology at Houston's Cancer Center. Curley says, "What John has done is find a way to produce a radio-frequency field so intense and so focused, it's achieving heating rates that have never before been described."

It was tested on rats, who are still alive. In late 2010, it will be tested on humans. Could it be a cure for cancer?

A Can Collector Who Made $1.4 Million Dollars

Curt-degerman

Who knew that by collecting cans throughout a city, one man could become a millionaire? Curt Degerman, a Swedish resident, rode around Sweden collecting bottles and cans to be recycled. Although many people viewed him as a homeless man who never completed school, never got married, or had his own family, he was far more than that. In 2008, he passed away at the age of 60, and left behind a fortune.

According to BBC Brasil, when it came time to sort through Curt's estate, it was discovered that he had amassed a fortune totaling nearly $ 1.4 million, leaving it all to a cousin who was kind enough to visit him occasionally in the years before his death. But that's not all. He also owned 124 bars of pure gold.

What many people were unaware of, was that he spent much of his time researching financing in newspapers at a local library. He invested the money that he earned from collecting cans, and built a fortune. He left all $1.4 million to a cousin who was the only person to visit him while he was ill. It goes to show that you can't always judge a book by his cover, can you?

Affordable Loan Changes for College Students

President Barack Obama is expected to sign the education bill into law on Tuesday, March 30th. The law will benefit young people by offering more student lending, caps on those repayments and more funding for minority colleges and universities.

'This reform of the federal student loan programs will save taxpayers $68 billion over the next decade,' Obama said in his weekly Internet and radio address Saturday. 'And with this legislation, we're putting that money to use achieving a goal I set for America: By the end of this decade, we will once again have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world.'

'To make sure our students don't go broke just because they chose to go to college, we're making it easier for graduates to afford their student loan payments,' Obama said.
